Defect-Polymorphism-Controlled Electrophoretic Propulsion of Anisometric Microparticles in a Nematic Liquid Crystal

چکیده
The nontrivial shape of colloidal particles creates complex elastic distortions and topological defects in liquid crystals plays a key role governing their electrophoretic propulsion through the medium. Here, we report experimental results on transport anisometric (snowman-shaped) polystyrene subjected to an alternating electric field perpendicular director nematic crystal. We demonstrate that asymmetry gives rise defect polymorphism by nucleating point or ring at multiple locations particle controls direction as well magnitude propulsion. Unlike spherical particles, quadrupolar can be transported directions plane applied field. Our findings provide alternative degree freedom translocating microparticles for applications microfluidics, controlled transport, directed assembly.

Flexoelectrically controlled twist of texture in a nematic liquid crystal
2014 We describe a new flexoelectric volume effect in homogeneous electric field, in the nematic phase of MBBA. An initial splay-bend texture is created by strong antagonistic planar and homeotropic anchoring on two glass plates. This results in a volume flexoelectric polarization. A transverse DC electric field creates a twist of the texture, which can be measured by the resulting wave guided ...

We use double-emulsion drops to experimentally investigate the defect structures of spherical shells of nematic liquid crystals. We uncover a rich scenario of coexisting defect structures dictated by the unavoidable finite thickness of even the thinnest shell and by the thickness variation around the sphere. These structures are characterized by a varying number of disclination lines and pairs ...
متن کاملNematic Liquid-Crystal Colloids
This article provides a concise review of a new state of colloidal matter called nematic liquid-crystal colloids. These colloids are obtained by dispersing microparticles of different shapes in a nematic liquid crystal that acts as a solvent for the dispersed particles. The microparticles induce a local deformation of the liquid crystal, which then generates topological defects and long-range f...
متن کاملElectrically Rotatable Polarizer Using One-Dimensional Photonic Crystal with a Nematic Liquid Crystal Defect Layer
Polarization characteristics of defect mode peaks in a one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal (PC) with a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) defect layer have been investigated. Two different polarized defect modes are observed in a stop band. One group of defect modes is polarized along the long molecular axis of the NLC, whereas another group is polarized along its short axis. Polarizations of the d...

Microorganisms often encounter anisotropy, for example in mucus and biofilms. We study how anisotropy and elasticity of the ambient fluid affects the speed of a swimming microorganism with a prescribed stroke. Motivated by recent experiments on swimming bacteria in anisotropic environments, we extend a classical model for swimming microorganisms, the Taylor swimming sheet, actuated by small-amp...
